FORT MYERS, Fla. --- The Colby College softball team earned a split in the first two games of the season, posting a 6-4 win over Middlebury College and a tough 6-5 loss in eight innings to New Paltz in the opening contests of the team's Florida trip.
No more information was available on the Middlebury game.
Colby had 13 hits in the opener against New Paltz, but the Hawks managed to pull out a 6-5 win over the Mules in eight innings.
Tory Starr had three hits, including a triple, scored a run and added an RBI for Colby. Mollie Puskar, Essie Widlanski and Carlie Minichino all had two hits for the Mules. Amy Palmer and Christine Fitzgerald both had one hit and one run scored, while Christine Gillespie finished with one hit and one RBI.
First-year pitcher Brittany Tasi allowed just one earned run over the final three innings in relief for Colby. Kelly O'Hea went all eight innings for New Paltz (3-7), which is coached by former Colby assistant softball and basketball coach Kristina Katori.
