LEWISTON, Maine -- Down 2-1 heading into the top of the
seventh inning, Colby College erupted for 10 runs on 10 hits in the seventh for
a stunning 11-2 NESCAC East Division win over the Bates College softball team
on Friday.
The visiting Mules (9-16, 1-6 NESCAC East) will host Bates (4-17, 0-7) in a
doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m.
While Colby pitcher Lauren Becker (Falls Church, Va.) held Bates' bats in check
for the most part over her 5.2 innings, she surrendered solo home runs to
sophomore Monica Berube (Plaistow, N.H.) in the second inning and to sophomore
Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.) in the sixth.
Dobish's blast over the fence in left center put the Bobcats on top 2-1 after
the Mules had evened the game in the top of the inning. Colby got its run as
pinch-runner Allana Sanborn (Eliot, Maine) came home on a two-base error, after
the Mules led the inning off with singles by Alyssa Lepore (Victor, N.Y.) and
Alex Essman (Littleton, Mass.).
After Christine Gillespie (North Andover, Mass.) led the seventh inning off
with a popout, Colby went berserk. Allyson Cheever (Augusta, Maine) tripled
through a drawn-in outfield, then scored on a ground-rule double by Barbara
Santos (Topsfield, Mass.) to tie the game at 2-2. Lepore hit an infield single,
followed by a three-run home run to deep left field by Essman, opening up a 5-2
lead. After a groundout gave the Mules two outs and empty bases, Colby
continued to rally for five more runs, including a two-run single by Kelly Roth
(South Deerfield, Mass.) and a three-run home run by Santos.
Brittany Tasi (Shelton, Conn.) came on for Becker and earned the win with 1.1
shutout innings.
Colby had 16 hits in the game, while Bates totaled seven. Cheever and Roth had
three hits apiece for Colby, while Santos and Essman had two apiece and a
combined seven RBIs. Karen Ullmann (Ramsey, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with a double
for the Bobcats.
