WATERVILLE, Maine --- Christine Gillespie (North Andover, Mass.) drove in the tying run and then moments later came in with the game-winning run as the Colby College softball team had to go nine innings for a 6-5 victory over University of Maine at Presque Isle in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday.
The Mules (14-13) had an easier time with a 10-0 win in a five-inning second game.
UMPI (5-18) had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Megan McCarthy (Westbrook, Maine).
Gillespie also had a two-run single in the game to finish with three RBI. Alex Essman (Littleton, Mass.) hit her eighth homer of the season with a solo shot in the second inning among her two hits. Tory Starr (Dunbarton, N.H.) and Meryl Poulin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) also had two hits for the Mules.
Erica Davis (North Yarmouth, Maine) and Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, Maine) both homered in the first game for UMPI.
Brittany Tasi (Shelton, Conn.), who entered the game in the sixth inning, earned her third win of the season for Colby.
Alyssa Lepore (Victor, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and two runs for the Mules in the second game. Sarah Whitfield (Wiscasset, Maine) had a bases clearing double and Gabi Kelly (Stinson Beach, Calif.) had a two-run single as Colby scored five times in the first inning. Essman smacked a two-run double and Emily Pavelle (Mahwah, N.J.) blasted an RBI triple in a four-run second inning.
Amanda Roehn (Tampa, Fla.) was the benefactor of Colby's offense with a two-hitter in five innings of work. Davis had both hits for UMPI.
