CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Colby College softball team's game season opener game with Western Connecticut started at 11:30 a.m. and ended well into the night on Sunday on the first day of the spring trip to Florida.

The Mules dropped an 8-0 game to Western Connecticut State in five innings after rain delays forced the game to be started up again at a scheduled time of 6:30 p.m. Colby's other scheduled contest with MIT was postponed.

"We had rain, thunder, and lightning delays in the morning," Colby assistant coach Candice Parent said. "We were rescheduled to resume play at around 6:30 p.m. and were told at 6:15 that it was going be another 30 minutes. That turned into an hour and both head coaches were helping to rake and shovel areas that had to be dug out and replaced with quick dry stuff."

Barbara Santos had a double among her two hits to lead Colby. Katie Graichen had her first collegiate hit, while Alyssa Cheever and Alex Essman each had one hit for the Mules.

Colby will play University of Chicago at 11:30 a.m. Monday and takes on Middlebury College at 1:30 p.m. Forecast calls for cloudy skies.
