Softball drops league game to Trinity

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Despite a pair of hits from Alyssa Lepore (Victor, N.Y.), Trinity College had two three-run innings on the way to a 9-5 victory over Colby College in NESCAC East softball play Friday at Crafts Field.

Melanie Orphanos (Norton, Mass.) went 4-for-4, including a pair of doubles, and scored twice for the Bantams.

Trinity improves to 12-11 overall and 3-4 in the NESCAC East, while Colby falls to 13-8 overall and 0-7 in the conference. The two teams meet in a doubleheader Saturday at noon at Colby.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning, but the Bantams went ahead for good with three runs in the second. Erika Klotz (Naperville, Ill.) had an RBI single and the other two runs came in on a Colby error.

Trinty added three more runs in the fifth inning for a 7-1 lead. Jessica Tait (North Salem, N.Y.), who had two hits, stroked a two-run double and Orphanos had an RBI single.

The Bantams added lone runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Klotz, who had two hits and two RBI, drove in the sixth inning run with a single and Nicole Nardella (Beverly, Mass.) had an RBI groundout in the seventh.

Colby’s first run in the opening inning came off an RBI single by Carlie Minichino (Stratford, Conn.), who went over 100 career hits in a game against Maine-Farmington on Wednesday. The Mules added a lone run in the fifth thanks to an RBI single by Christine Gillespie (North Andover, Mass.). The Mules got as close as 8-5 in the sixth inning with three runs, two scoring on Trinity errors and one on an RBI single by Barbara Santos (Topsfield, Mass.).

Santos scored two runs for Colby.

Katherine Poulos (Wilton, Conn.) worked the first six innings for the Trinity victory.
