WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College softball coach Dick Bailey earned his 400th career victory as the Mules finally got to play a home game in a 5-1 victory over Bates College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division play Thursday.
Bailey has a 400-263-3 record in 23 seasons at St. Joseph’s (Maine) College, Westbrook College (now University of New England) and Colby. Bailey, a native of Springfield, Mass., has a 154-144-3 record in his 11th season with the Mules after leading St. Joseph’s from 1985 to 1995. He was at Westbrook for one year before taking the Colby job for the 1997 season.
Alyssa Crowell (Gilford, N.H.) improved to 4-1 this season with a two-hitter for Colby. She had four strikeouts and no walks while pitching to just two batters over the minimum.
The Mules (9-5 overall, 1-3 NESCAC East), playing their home opener, scored three times in the first inning and added lone runs in the second and fifth innings. Amy Palmer (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) and Carlie Minichino (Stratford, Conn.) both doubled in the first inning and the Mules got an RBI single from Christine Gillespie (North Andover, Mass.). Miki Starr (Dunbarton, N.H.) added a sacrifice fly and Mollie Puskar (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
Palmer put Colby up 4-0 when her RBI groundout scored Alaina Clark (Casco, Maine), who had two walks and was hit by a pitch in her three at-bats.
Bates (4-8, 2-4) got its lone run when Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) hit a homer in the fourth inning with two outs. Franklin had both hits for the Bobcats.
The Mules got that run back in the fifth when Tory Starr (Dunbarton, N.H.) tripled and later scored on an RBI single by Sarah Whitfield (Wiscasset, Maine).
Minichino and Tory Starr both had two hits and one run scored for Colby. Whitfield went 1-for-1 with her RBI single, a sacrifice bunt and was hit by a pitch.
Colby and Bates play two more games Friday in Lewiston at 3 p.m.
