BRUNSWICK, Maine --- The Colby College softball team won for the seventh time in the last eight games in a 6-5 victory over Bowdoin College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division play Friday.
The Mules, winners of three of their last four NESCAC games, are 17-8 overall and 3-7 in league play heading into a noon doubleheader at Colby on Saturday. Bowdoin falls to 20-16-1 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
Allyson Cheever had two hits to raise her team-best batting average up to .419 for the Mules. Carlie Minichino also had two hits and Annie Wilson scored two runs. Alex Essman walked three times and had one hit, while Christine Gillespie had a big two-run single for the Mules.
Bowdoin led 4-1 after three innings, with Cheever scoring the lone run for Colby on a bases loaded walk by Essman in the third.
Meryl Poulin and Wilson both walked in the fourth inning and scored to make it 4-3 after four innings. Poulin scored on a Bowdoin error and Alyssa Lepore had an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
Essman led off Colby’s three-run fifth inning with a walk and Barbara Santos followed with a single. After an out, Lizzi Fort’s RBI single brought in Heather Quadir, who came into run for Essman. Gillespie then followed with her two-run single to score Poulin and Fort, who had stolen second base before the hit.
Alyssa Crowell entered the game in the third inning and earned her seventh victory of the season. She struck out three and walked two.
