BRUNSWICK, Maine --- Carlie Minichino belted a home run in the eighth inning and earned the victory in relief as the Colby College softball team earned a split of a doubleheader with Bowdoin College in a 5-4 victory in the nightcap in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division play Friday.
Bowdoin (23-11, 5-7 NESCAC East) took a 4-3 win in the opener.
Minichino went deep to center field to help the Mules improve to 10-13 overall and 4-8 in the conference. Bowdoin had rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4. Brittany Tasi went 5.1 innings before giving way to Minichino, who improved to 1-1 on the season with the win. Alyssa Crowell, who beat Bowdoin on Thursday in a complete game, earned her first save of the season by working the bottom of the eighth inning.
Minichino also had an RBI single in the third inning as did teammate Tory Starr to give the Mules a 2-1 lead. Colby added two more runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Starr and Mollie Puskar. Colby got a pair of hits from Puskar and Allyson Cheever had one hit and was on base four times. Alyssa Lepore and Annie Wilson each had one hit and one run.
In the first game, Amanda Roehn went six innings for Colby and allowed just two earned runs. She also went 2-for-2 from the plate and Tory Starr also had two hits and an RBI. Minichino had one hit and one RBI, while Barbara Santos had an RBI single for the Mules.
