WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College softball team needed only five innings in taking an 11-0 victory over University of Southern Maine in the opener of a doubleheader Sunday, but the Huskies pulled out a 3-1 win over the Mules in the second game at Crafts Field.
Colby is 11-3 overall and USM moves to 2-16.
Carlie Minichino (Stratford, Conn.) smacked a solo home run and a two-run double in the first game as the Mules won by the mercy rule. Barbara Santos (Topsfield, Mass.) finished with a two-run homer, a double, three runs scored, and a walk. Christine Gillespie (North Andover, Mass.) went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and two runs scored, while Tory Starr (Dunbarton, N.H.) went 3-for-3 and scored three runs.
Brittany Tasi, who started both games for Colby, earned the victory by allowing just three hits in four innings.
Sarah Cusack (Wells, Maine) had a double in the opener for USM.
Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine) went the distance in the nightcap for USM, allowing just five hits and striking out three.
Molly Hopkins (Augusta, Maine) had a pair of doubles and two RBI for the Huskies in the second game. Jessica Hayden (Madison, Maine) went 2-for-2 and Laura Leger (Quincy, Mass.) also had two hits.
The Mules scored in the second when Minichino’s single brought in Gillespie, but Colby ended up leaving the bases loaded in the inning.
Hayden’s RBI single in the fourth inning brought in Hopkins, who had doubled, with the tying run. The Huskies then scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run double by Hopkins that brought in Cusack and Cerise Humphrey (Fryeburg, Maine).
