WATERVILLE, Maine --- Alyssa Lepore tripled and scored in the first game to give Colby College a 1-0 victory and then had three RBI in a 5-4 win in the nightcap as the Mules softball swept a doubleheader from Thomas College on Wednesday.
In the early contest, Lepore scored the game's only run in the bottom of the third inning after reaching on a two-out triple. Fellow junior Alex Essman drove her in with an RBI single. Lindsay Peterson had two hits for the Mules.
Meanwhile, Colby first-year pitcher Lauren Becker threw a complete game, giving up only three hits while striking out nine.
In the second game, Colby and Thomas unwrapped their bats and combined for 17 total hits. Colby opened up with one run in each of their first three innings, only to fall behind in the fifth when Thomas rallied for four runs behind four hits, including a two-run homer by catcher Samantha Moore. Not to be outdone, the Mules came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and scored the game-tying and go ahead runs. After two-out walks to Peterson and Barbara Santos, Lepore came up with her second and third RBI of the night with a bases-clearing double. The game was called in the top of the 7th inning due to darkness.
Colby, which had 16 hits, was led by Santos with four hits, Lepore with three, and Essman and Katie Graichen each with two.
"Sweeping a doubleheader is always positive, and I am happy with the way we hit tonight," said Colby head coach Kristina Katori. "On the mound, in the field, and at the plate, everybody pitched in and everybody contributed."
Colby travels to Hartford, Conn., on Friday for the first game of a three-game series against the Bantams of Trinity College. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
