WATERVILLE, Maine --- Eight Colby College athletes were named to the second New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Winter All-Sportsmanship Team on Thursday. The league came out with a sportsmanship team for the first time during the 2007-08 academic year. The team recognizes student-athletes from each varsity sport who have demonstrated outstanding dedication to sportsmanship. The athletes were selected to the team by their teammates and coaches. Sophomore men’s basketball player Christian Van Loenen (Falmouth, Maine), sophomore women’s basketball player Mary Cummings (Summit, N.J.), sophomore women’s hockey player Stephanie Scarpato (Osterville, Mass.), junior men’s hockey player Michael Belliveau (Bridgewater, Nova Scotia), sophomore women’s swimmer Erin Schnettler (Edina, Minn.), junior men’s swimmer David Hirsch (Pittsburgh, Pa.), first-year men’s squash player Harry Smith (Locust Valley, N.Y.), and junior women’s squash player Samantha Smith (Locust Valley, N.Y.) were honored from Colby. Samantha Smith was honored for the second straight year. She and her brother, Harry, were also NESCAC all-conference selections this year. Both squash players made the second team.
