Dewey heads to men's NCAA swim meet

HOUSTON, Texas --- Colby College senior Jabez Dewey heads back to the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships starting Thursday and finishing Saturday at the University of Houston.

Dewey earned All-America honors last year by finishing fifth in the 100-yard backstroke and heads into this year's meet as the sixth seed. Dewey had a school record 50.87 in a preliminary race and then had a 50.90 in the championship final at last year's meet. He finished in 11th place in the race as a sophomore with a time of 51.73.

First-year swimmer John Thomas of Johns Hopkins is seeded first in the 100 backstroke in 50.56, while Dewey has a top time so far this year of 51.36.

Dewey also will race in the 200 backstroke and 50 freestyle. He placed 14th in the 200 backstroke (1:53.34, school record 1:52.53 prelim) at last year's meet and is seeded 20th this year. Dewey also will compete in the 50 freestyle.
