OSHKOSH, Wisc. --- Colby College runner Ian London (Topsham, Maine) qualified for the final of the men's 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships on Thursday at Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

London ran in the slowest of the two heats and finished second with a time of 4:03.60. The top four runners in each heat and the next four top times were the 12 runners to advance to Saturday's 2:20 p.m. (EST) final.

Pomona-Pitzer's Will Leer won London's heat with a time of 4:03.16. Leer and London can obviously run much faster, but the object of the heat is to place in the top four and advance without exerting too much energy. Leer has the top Division III time in the country at 3:41.98 and London broke a 26-year-old Colby school record with a 3:49.27 finish at the Open New England Championships a few weeks ago.

Five of the eight runners in the second heat were below four minutes, including heat winner Brian Butzler of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 3:56.89.

Colby women's track and field athlete Anna King (Greenland, N.H.) will race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday.
