LEWISTON, Maine --- In a match with playoff implications, the Colby College volleyball team fell 3-0 to rival Bates College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Wednesday night.
The Mules fall to 6-14 overall and 0-7 in league play, while Bates improves to 12-7 overall and 1-6 in conference play. The Bobcats move into the eighth and final spot in the upcoming NESCAC playoffs.
The Bobcats won by scores of 25-22, 25-14, 25-12 and will host the Bates Classic starting Friday. The Mules will compete in the Hall of Fame Tournament at Mount Holyoke and Smith starting Friday. The first match for Colby is Friday at 7 p.m. against Westfield State.
Leading the way for Bates were senior captains Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.), with 14 kills, eight digs and two blocks, and Tess Dokus (Fairport, N.Y.), with nine kills.
Colby was led by sophomore Caitlin Burchill (Walpole, Mass.) with three kills
and 10 digs. Senior Megan Conroy (San Francisco, Calif.) and first-year Emily
Ten Eyck (Minnetrista, Minn.) both had nine digs apiece. Juniors Clare Reich
(Piedmont, Calif.) and Hannah Bowman (Hampden-Sydney, Va.) both recorded eight
digs. First-year Margaret Taylor (Cabin John, Md.) made three blocks.
