CLINTON,
N.Y. -- Heather Arvidson '11 hammered a match-high 12 kills and added four
blocks to lead visiting Colby College to a four-set victory against Hamilton
College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference women's volleyball
match played at Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Oct. 30.
The set scores were 25-18, 25-18, 20-25 and 25-19. Colby (10-16 overall, 1-7
NESCAC) won its third straight match while Hamilton lost its fourth in a row.
Caitlin Burchill '12 chipped in 11 kills and 11 digs for the Mules. Clare Reich
'11 led all players with 22 digs and Emily Varni '13 had 14 to go with four
aces. Emily Ten Eyck '13 was credited with 17 assists and three aces. Mackie
Sewall '12 and Maggie Taylor '13 blocked five hitting attempts apiece.
Amanda Cohen '13 paced the Continentals with 11 kills. Ally Martella '13
recorded nine kills and a season-high 13 digs. Alex Singh '11 contributed seven
kills and three blocks. Cecelie Pikus '13 passed out 29 assists and served
three aces. Rachel Irizarry '12 registered a dozen digs and Alyssa Hopper '13
had 11.
Colby jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set, but Hamilton rallied to tie
the score at 15. The Mules then scored six of the next seven points and went on
to win by seven. In the second set, Colby led 7-3 early and cruised to another
seven-point win.
The Continentals (5-28, 0-9) rallied in the third set thanks in part to an
attack percentage of .296. Hamilton led 13-9, but the Mules roared back to tie
the score at 18. The Continentals rattled off the next three points and won by
five. In the fourth and final set, Colby held a slim 11-9 lead, but scored the
next three points to give itself some breathing room. Hamilton never recovered
and the Mules won by six points.
Colby takes on Middlebury College and Williams College in two more NESCAC
matches at Hamilton on Saturday, Oct. 31. The Continentals host Bates College
in their regular season finale on Saturday.
