WATERVILLE, Maine --- Sophomore outside hitter Emily Varni (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) finished with nine kills, 12 defensive digs, and five service aces as the Colby College volleyball team opened the season with a 3-0 win over University of Southern Maine on Friday night in the Colby Quad Tournament.
The Mules (1-0) won by scores of 25-10, 25-16, 25-14 and will play host to Husson University at 11 a.m. Saturday. Husson took a 3-0 win against University of Maine at Farmington in the other match Friday.
Heather Arvidson (Andover, Mass.) and Caitlin Burchill (Walpole, Mass.) had nine kills apiece for Colby. In their first collegiate matches, Ellie Linden (Andover, Conn.) had 11 assists and six digs and classmate Kate Pleasants finished with 15 assists and three aces. Clare Reich (Piedmont, Calif.) had seven digs and Maggie Taylor (Cabin John, Md.) served three aces for the Mules.
Hallie Noah (South Anchorage, Alaska) had nine assists, four kills, and two blocks for Southern Maine (0-6). Shannon Shuttle added three kills and four assists.
Colby also will play against Maine-Farmington at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
