Volleyball team falls in NESCAC opener

WATERVILLE, Maine --- First-year setter Kate Pleasants continued to play well with 19 assists and 18 defensive digs for the Colby College volleyball team in a 3-0 setback to Bowdoin College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Melissa Haskell had 12 kills and 10 defensive digs for Bowdoin (4-2 overall, 1-0 NESCAC). The Polar Bears also received 10 kills from Hillary Cederna, 19 assists from Stephanie Bond, 17 digs and 14 assists by Margot Roux, and 18 digs from Taylor Vail. The Polar Bears won by scores of 25-20, 25-21, 25-15.

Clare Reich also had 18 digs for Colby (3-2 overall, 0-1 NESCAC), while Caitlin Burchill and Emily Varni both had 15 digs. Burchill and Maggie Taylor both had seven kills and the Mules received four kills apiece from Lily Kramlich-Taylor, Varni, and Heather Arvidson.

Maine rivals Bowdoin and Bates will meet at Colby on Saturday at 11 a.m. in a league match. The Mules play host to Tufts University at 1:30 p.m.
