Varni sets well in volleyball loss to Trinity

LEWISTON, Maine --- Colby College's Emily Varni was forced to play setter for the first time in her life and contributed 25 assists, 17 defensive digs, three service aces, and two blocks for the Mules in a 3-1 setback to Trinity College on Saturday at Bates College.

The Mules, who fall to 3-4 overall, lost starting setter Emily Ten Eyck to an injury early in the opening game. Varni took over at setter in the Mules' 25-16, 25-23, 24-26, 25-21 loss to the Bantams.

Caitlin Burchill added a team-high 26 defensive digs, 10 kills, and five service aces. Heather Arvidson had eight kills, eight digs, and three blocks for the Mules. Megan Conroy also finished with eight kills and had 10 digs, while Anne Sewall had six kills.
