Volleyball team fights hard in 3-2 setback

WATERVILLE, Maine --- After falling in three straight games to Bowdoin College just 12 days ago, the Colby College volleyball team won the opening two sets Wednesday night only to see the Polar Bears strike back with three straight set wins in a 3-2 victory over the Mules in non-conference play.

The Mules (4-7 overall) won 26-24 and 25-21 in the first two sets, but Bowdoin (8-5) took the next three in 25-19, 25-21, and 15-10.

Ellie Brennan (Medway, Mass.) had 12 kills for the Polar Bears. Stephanie Bond (Lexington, Mass.) added 24 assists, while Jillian Berkman (Nashville, Tenn.) had 17 defensive digs.

Colby did the job defensively for much of the night, with four players at 20 digs or more. Maggie Taylor (Cabin John, Md.) led the way with 25 digs, seven kills, and three blocks. Clare Reich (Piedmont, Calif.) had 24 digs, Caitlin Burchill (Walpole, Mass.) finished with 22, and Kate Pleasants (Virginia Beach, Va.) had 20. Burchill also had 11 kills and a two aces, while Pleasants also had a pair of aces and 32 assists. Heather Arvidson (Andover, Mass.) tied with Burchill in kills with 11 and Taylor in blocks with three, Hannah Bowman (Hampden-Sydney, Va.) had 16 digs, and Lily Kramlich-Taylor (Sacramento, Calif.) had seven kills and two aces.
