Colby volleyball opens season with win, loss

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Jessie Prentice set a school record for aces in a three-game match as the Colby College volleyball team opened the season with an easy 3-0 win over Maine Maritime Academy in the Colby Invitational on Friday night.

The Mules (1-1) then dropped a tough 3-1 match to Gordon College.

Prentice had 15 aces in a 30-16, 30-15, 30-12 win against Maine Maritime. She had eight aces in the second game and also finished the match with 15 digs. Kendall Kirby had the old school record of 14 set last year against Worcester State.

Jenny Lawrence added 27 assists and seven digs, Larissa Levine had 11 kills, Heather Arvidson added seven kills, and Clare Reich had eight digs.

Gordon, the defending tourney champs, won the key third game in a 30-25, 27-30, 32-30, 30-21 win against the Mules. Colby led 29-27 at one point in the third game. Lawrence had 34 assists and 19 digs, Levine had 12 kills and seven blocks, Prentice had 12 kills and 15 digs, Meredith Lawler had 12 kills, Cassie Sancartier had 18 digs, and Megan Conroy finished with 17 digs.
