WATERVILLE, Maine ---- Gordon College won the final three games by tight scores in taking a 3-1 victory over Colby College on the first day of the Colby Volleyball Invitational at Wadsworth Gymnasium on Friday night.
The Mules were ranked 22nd in the preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll, but that ranking had more to do with last year's team that went 37-4 and made the NCAA quarterfinals.
In other matches Friday, Rhode Island College took a 3-0 (30-15, 30-16, 30-17) win over University of Southern Maine; University of Maine at Farmington won 3-0 (30-20, 30-23, 30-28) against University of Maine at Machias; and Maine Maritime Academy captured a 3-0 (30-28, 30-19, 30-9) win over University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Robin Smalt had 16 kills to lead Gordon (2-3) in the win over Colby, which had a 15-match home winning streak snapped. Chelsea Duprey and Blakely Burns each had 12 kills, Chelsea Pettibone added 35 assists and Heidi Hakes finished with seven kills and six blocks.
Gordon lost 30-25 in the first game, but bounced back with 30-26, 33-31 and 30-26 victories. Colby led 26-23 in the second game and was up 31-30 in game three.
Meredith Lawler had 16 kills and Jenny Lawrence dished 44 assists for Colby (0-1). Cassie Sancartier had 11 kills, while Julie Hike and Jessie Prentice both had nine kills. Kendall Kirby had 18 digs for the Mules.
In the Rhode Island College win over Southern Maine, Erin Miga had eight kills and teammate Jeanne Rosa had 17 assists. Madison Greene added six kills for RIC (3-3).
Shannon Stoll paced Southern Maine (3-1) with nine kills. Cassi Sticht had four blocks and Allison White added eight digs for USM.
Friday's results: Maine-Farmington 3, Maine-Machias 0 (30-20, 30-23, 30-28); Maine Maritime 3, Maine-Presque Isle 0 (30-28, 30-19, 30-9); Gordon 3, Colby 1 (25-30, 30-26, 33-31, 30-26); Rhode Island College 3, Southern Maine 0 (30-15, 30-16, 30-17).
