Middlebury women's basketball beats Mules

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College women's basketball team fought back from an early deficit and led late in the game before Middlebury College pulled away in the final six minutes for a 77-66 win in the New England Small College Athletic Conference opener for both teams Friday.

Tracy Nale (Waterville, Maine) had 16 of her team-high 18 points in the second half for Colby (2-9, 0-1 NESCAC). Alison Cappelloni (Sudbury, Mass.) added 17 points and eight rebounds, while Katie McCabe (Watertown, Conn.) had 10 points. Tanya Rosbash (Newton, Mass.) finished with seven points and five assists and Kathleen Nicholson (Tuftonboro, N.H.) had seven points and four assists.

Middlebury led 15-6 early in the game, but the Mules battled back and the teams went into halftime tied 28-28.

Colby got off to the quick start in the second half and led 48-42 with 12:07 remaining. The Mules led 55-52 when Cappelloni nailed a 3-point shot with 6:52 left. However, Middlebury took the lead at 58-57 with 4:13 remaining on a Carlie Harrington (Duxbury, Mass.) lay-up and held the lead from that point.

Emily Johnson (Lower Gwnedd, Pa.) had 31 points, seven assists, six rebounds and six steals to power Middlebury. Johnson had 21 of her points in the second half. She was 13-for-14 from the foul line in the second half and finished the game at 15-for-16.

Colby will play host to Williams College on Saturday at 2 p.m., while Middlebury heads to Bowdoin College for a 2 p.m. game.
