Women's basketball falls to rival Bowdoin

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College women's basketball team lost at home for the first this season and dropped its New England Small College Athletic Conference opener after Bowdoin College used a spurt at the end of the first half to take the lead for good in a 65-56 win Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Bowdoin College won for the 14th straight time in moving to 14-1 overall, while the Mules fall to 10-3. The Polar Bears won both regular season games this season.

Kaitlin Donahoe (Amherst, N.Y.) led Bowdoin with 17 points and four assists, while Nicole Coombes (Simsbury, Conn.) added 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Amy Hackett (Bangor, Maine) finished with 13 points and Jill Henrikson (Bath, Maine) chipped in eight points.

Colby held its final lead of the game at 19-18 in the opening half when Diana Manduca (Portland, Maine) knocked down two free throws. Bowdoin, however, went on a 13-4 run over the final 3:57 to take a 31-23 margin at halftime.

The Polar Bears led 35-27 when the Mules put together a 6-0 run to cut the margin to 35-33, the closest Colby would come the rest of the way. Bowdoin led 39-36 with 11:36 to play and used its tough half-court defense to pull away for a 59-45 margin with 5:05 to play. Colby got as close as eight points in the final minute and had the ball with a chance to cut the lead to six points.

Manduca finished with 13 points and four assists to lead the Mules. Jil Vaughan (Wareham, Mass.) had 10 of her 12 points in the second half, while Rachael Mack (Augusta, Maine) finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
