Women's basketball edged by Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. --- Alison Cappelloni exploded for 27 points and four blocked shots for the Colby College women's basketball team, but Middlebury College fought back for a 64-62 win in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday night.

Cappelloni shot 10-for-16 from the field for Colby (3-9, 0-1 NESCAC).

Middlebury led 30-28 at halftime and stayed in front for a good deal of the second half. However, the Mules battled back and opened up a 60-56 lead with 2:26 remaining when Karlyn Adler nailed two free throws.

Kaitlyn Fallon answered with a lay-up for Middlebury (9-4, 1-0) with 1:58 left, but Colby's Katie McCabe scored a bucket with 1:32 to go to put the lead back to four at 62-58.

The Panthers got the lead to one point when Katie Fisher nailed a 3-point shot with 1:06 left. After two unsuccessful possessions by Colby and one by Middlebury, Lani Young scored on a 3-point play with just five seconds remaining for the final margin. The Mules missed a 3-point shot in the closing seconds.

Adler finished with six points and six assists for Colby. Heather Pratt had nine points and Julianne Kowalski had eight points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Young led Middlebury with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Colby returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. at Williams College.
