Women's basketball wins first game in Florida

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. --- Jil Vaughan and her Colby College women's basketball teammates started the second half of the season with some force on the boards as the Mules took a 61-53 victory over King's College in the ECAC Holiday Festival at the Disney Resort Center on Saturday.

The Mules (7-1) had an overwhelming 60-20 advantage in rebounding, but King's (5-6) stayed in the game with a solid effort from the foul line. King's shot 23-for-31 from the free-throw line, while the Mules managed just a 12-for-18 effort.

Vaughan had game-highs of 13 points and 12 rebounds to pace Colby to its third straight victory. Vaughan also tied for a team-high with three steals, finished with a pair of blocked shots, and shot 4-for-7 from the field and 5-for-6 from the foul line.

Senior captain Alison Cappelloni added 12 points and nine rebounds. She moved to within 28 points of 1,000 career points with 972 points and 514 rebounds. Rachael Mack added eight points, nine rebounds, and a game-high four blocked shots. Diana Manduca also had eight points and dished three assists, while point guard Aarika Ritchie contributed six points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Jacky McLaughlin added six points and three rebounds.

The two teams battled to a 29-29 halftime tie and were still tied at 33-33 when the Mules went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. With Colby holding a tight 42-39 lead, the Mules received consecutive baskets from Vaughan, Ritchie, and Mack for a 48-39 lead. King's got as close as 52-47 with 6:21 left in the game, but Colby once again pulled away with a 7-0 run capped by a 3-point shot by Manduca with 3:49 left to make the score 59-47.

Colby held King's to just 26.5 percent (13-for-49) shooting from the field. The Mules are holding the opponent to just 34 percent field goal shooting in the opening eight games.

The Mules finish their trip to Florida with a 10 a.m. game Sunday against College of Staten Island.
