Women's basketball 8-1 after beating Castleton

KISSIMMEE, Fla. --- The 22nd-ranked Colby College women's basketball team held Castleton State to just 14 points in the opening half and then opened up a big lead in the final 20 minutes on the way to a 64-37 victory Sunday in the ECAC Holiday Classic at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

Jil Vaughan finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jules Kowalski added seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Jacky McLaughlin nailed three 3-point shots on the way to 10 points, Rachael Mack added eight points and five boards, and Diana Manduca nailed two 3-point shots among her eight points. Sophomore guard Jayde Bennett pulled down nine rebounds, had a team-high three assists, and scored four points.

Kowalski, a senior tri-captain, moved her career totals to 813 points and 610 rebounds after nine games of her final year. Mack is up to 660 points and 451 rebounds in her third season.

The Mules, winners of four straight games and now 8-1 overall, fell behind 6-3 in the opening few minutes of the game. Colby went on a 14-2 run, capped by a 3-point shot by McLaughlin, to take a 17-8 margin with 9:10 to intermission. The Mules ended up taking a 26-14 lead into the break.

Colby put the game away quickly in the second half, using a 22-2 scoring run to start the half and take a 48-16 lead. The Mules went up 59-21 with 6:02 to play.

Castleton (5-4) received 17 points and three steals from Christine Jaques.

Colby will play a non-league game at Bates College on Thursday at 7 p.m.
