Women's basketball opens with victory

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Julianne Kowalski (Montville, N.J.) had a double-double in scoring and rebounding and new teammate Diana Manduca (Portland, Maine) had an active debut with 10 points as the Colby College women's basketball team opened the season with a 61-45 win over Vassar College in the opening round of the Colby Tournament on Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Kowalski finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and two steals as the Mules broke open the game in the second half. Manduca also had 10 points and chipped in with four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Samantha Allen (Bridgton, Maine) led all Colby scorers with 13 points.

The Mules will play in the title game Saturday at 3 p.m. against St. Joseph's College. Vassar (1-1) will play Thomas College in the consolation game at 1 p.m. The Monks took a 79-61 win over Thomas in the other game.

Aarika Ritchie (Lee, Maine) added eight points, five rebounds, and two assists for Colby. Rachael Mack (Augusta, Maine) and Karlyn Adler (Rye Brook, N.Y.) both had six points, while Alison Cappelloni (Sudbury, Mass.) pulled down seven rebounds.

Emily Haeuser (South Portland, Maine) had 13 points and 12 rebounds to power Vassar. Tori Chaltain (Hanover, N.H.) added 10 points and nine boards, while Kristyn Tempora (Marlboro, N.J.) finished with seven points and five rebounds. Brittany Parks (Escondido, Calif.) had nine points before leaving the game in the opening half with an injury.

The two teams combined for 28 turnovers in the opening half and the Mules held a 26-24 lead at intermission. Colby went on a 19-6 run to start the second half in taking control of the contest for good. With the score tied 28-28, Ritchie hit a lay-up to make it 30-28 and Mack followed with a basket for a four-point lead. Ritchie hit one free throw for a 33-28 margin and Adler followed with a 3-point shot to put Colby up by eight. Ritchie nailed a pair of free throws with 15:12 to play and Manduca finished the scoring run with a basket for a 40-28 lead.
