Women's basketball falls at UMF

FARMINGTON, Maine --- The Colby College women’s basketball team finished the regular season at 13-11 after falling 52-51 in a non-conference game at University of Maine at Farmington on Tuesday night.

The seventh-seeded Mules play at second-seeded Amherst College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinal game Saturday at 4 p.m. Amherst is ranked fifth in the country, but the Mules lost by just one point at Amherst earlier this season when the Lord Jeffs were ranked fourth nationally.

Rachael Mack, Alison Cappelloni, and Aarika Ritchie all had nine points for Colby in Tuesday’s game. Mack finished with a team-high 11 rebounds and added a pair of assists and two steals. Meanwhile, Cappelloni had 10 rebounds and teammate Sam Allen finished with six points and 11 boards.

Caitlyn Laflin led UMF (13-10) with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Beavers led 28-21 at halftime, but Colby had a spirited comeback and the Mules took a 47-40 lead when Mary Cummings nailed a pair of free throws with 6:53 to play. The Beavers, though, scored the next seven points and tied the game with 3:33 to go on an inside basket by Laflin.

Colby settled down and went ahead 51-47 after Ritchie hit two free throws with 3:11 left and Cappelloni added a layup with 2:30 to play. The Beavers scored the final five points in the last 2:02 of the contest. Erin Porter hit one of two free throws with 2:02 to play, Laflin added two free throws with 1:40 to go, and then Ashley Busque scored on a layup with 54 seconds left to give UMF the lead at 52-51. The Mules had three shots in the final 27 seconds.
