WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College women’s hockey team scored two goals in the opening 2:03 of play and then held on for a 6-3 victory over University of Massachusetts at Boston on Wednesday at Alfond Rink.
Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.), who started the week ranked second in the New England Small College Athletic Conference in scoring, had one goal and two assists for Colby (6-5-2). Julian and Dana Yerigan (Isanti, Minn.) assisted on the first goal of the game by Colette Finley (St. Paul, Minn.) just 1:11 into the contest.
Liz Osgood (N. Andover, Mass.) made it 2-0 at 2:03 on a goal off an assist from Laura Anning (Ingramport, Nova Scotia).
UMass-Boston (6-7) battled back and cut the margin in half when Katelyn Lajoie (Marlboro, Mass.) scored at 5:44 off a pass from Maria Nasta (Andover, Mass.). The Mules, though, scored about three minutes later to make it 3-1 after a period when Elissa Kurtz (Miami, Fla.) tallied off passes from Anning and Amanda Comeau (Southbury, Conn.). Anning, a junior forward, is at 44 goals and 37 assists for 81 career points.
Meryl Poulin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) made it 4-1 at 5:24 of the second period off an assist from Osgood.
The Beacons scored the next two goals to make the game interesting. Katelyn Corsino (Belmont, Mass.) made the game 4-2 after two periods with a goal at 14:37 off passes from Nasta and Hannah Davis (Oakdale, Minn.). Lauren Duran (Woburn, Mass.) got her goal at 5:54 of the third period off a third assist by Nasta and from Rachel Sousa (Woburn, Mass.).
Julian gave Colby some breathing room with a goal from Osgood at 11:25. Julian then assisted on the final goal of the game at 14:29 off the stick of Stephanie Scarpato (Osterville, Mass.).
Genevieve Triganne (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) and Lacey Brown (Freeport, Maine) combined to make 27 saves for the Mules.
