Women's hockey falls to Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine --- Despite the ninth goal of the season for Colby College's Stephanie Scarpato, the Mules women's hockey team fell 5-2 to University of Southern Maine on Tuesday night.

Danielle Ward scored three goals in the first period and added an assist for the Huskies (7-9-2). Katie Paradis added one goal and two assists for the winners.

After USM had taken a 1-0 lead with a power play goal by Ward with 1:01 to play, the Mules (2-11-5) hung tight with a power play goal at 4:02 by Scarpato. Elissa Kurtz and Kaitlyn Conway had assists on the play.

Ward scored at 7:12 and 14:46 to put the Huskies up 3-1 and Katie Davis added an unassisted goal at 18:28. Katie Paradis of USM scored the lone goal of the second at 12:27. Meanwhile, Colby's Alex Essman scored her first goal of the season after being set up by Tatiana Kowalewski.

Loni Pisani made 23 saves in net for the Mules, while Kimmy Flanders had 19 stops.
