AMHERST, Mass. --- Brianne Wheeler stopped 38 shots for the Colby College women's hockey team and the Mules gave fifth-ranked and defending national champion Amherst College a tough time in a 3-2 loss on Friday.
The Mules fall to 7-11 overall, while Amherst moves to 11-4-2. The two teams play again Saturday at 3 p.m.
Colby received goals from Meryl Poulin and Marissa Simmons. Amherst led 2-0 when Poulin scored at 9:26 of the second period off assists from Natalie Fischer and Alex Essman.
The Jeffs scored their second goal of the game off the power play at 14:22 of the second period on Braidie Campbell's goal.
Colby made it interesting when Marissa Simmons scored with just 3:31 left in the game from Stephanie Scarpato and Ally Kane.
Wheeler made 30 saves in the final two periods, while Caroline Hu made just 10 saves in the entire game for Amherst.
