WATERVILLE, Maine --- Marissa Simmons (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) did the job offensively with a pair of goals and first-year goalie Filomania Falcucci (Braintree, Mass.) won her first collegiate start as the Colby College women's hockey team opened the season with a 2-1 victory over New England College at Alfond Rink on Saturday.
Falcucci made 24 saves, including 12 stops in the second period.
NEC (4-3) scored first after the teams battled to a scoreless tie after the first period. Jessica Donnelly (Casa Grande, Ariz.) tallied at 5:33 of the second period off assists from Chelsea Torrico (Mount Washington, Mass.) and Danielle Taylor (Bridgewater, Mass.).
Simmons, who had four goals and five assists last year in her first year with the Mules, tied the game just 1:30 later on the power play off assists from Stephanie Scarpato (Osterville, Mass.) and Liz Osgood (North Andover, Mass.).
The same line went to work again in the third period when Scarpato and Osgood assisted again on the game-winning goal by Simmons with 8:34 to play in the contest.
Colby then held on in the final minutes with NEC pressing for the tying goal. The Pilgrims got a power play with 29 seconds remaining in the game and had already pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.
Colby plays host to Southern Maine on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
