GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) scored a pair of goals in a span of 1:27 midway through the second period to give the Colby College Mules a 3-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a non-league women's ice hockey game Sunday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win lifts the Mules record to 7-10-5 overall and gives them a sweep of the season series. The Huskies dropped their second straight to fall to 8-14-1 overall.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the second period, Julian gave the Mules the lead for good at 9:53 with her ninth goal of the season. Classmate Laura Anning (Ingramport, Nova Scotia), who assisted on all three Colby goals, and junior Marissa Mullane (Wallingford, Conn.) picked up the assists.
Julian added an insurance marker at 11:20 when she fired home the rebound of Anning's shot for a power-play goal. Anning and sophomore Amanda Comeau (Southbury, Conn.) drew the assists.
Colby got the early jump on USM scoring 34 seconds into the game. Comeau fired home a rebound of an Anning shot for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
Eleven minutes later, the Huskies scored the equalizer. Sophomore Megan Irving (Cumberland, Maine) redirected a shot from freshman Erica Robertson (St. Albans, Vt.) to light the lamp. Senior Kelly Connors (Topsfield, Mass.) picked up the second assist.
Junior Genevieve Triganne (Point-Claire, Quebec) and sophomore Lacey Brown (Freeport, Maine) split the goaltending chores for Colby. Triganne played 48:15 and was credited with 20 saves. Brown played the final 11:32 and had four stops.
Colby hosts Wesleyan University for a two-game series on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
