WATERVILLE, Maine --- Laura Anning (Ingramport, Nova Scotia) scored on the power play with 2:29 left in the game to lift the Colby College women's hockey team to a 4-3 win over Wesleyan University in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday.
Colby will be the fifth seed and plays at fourth-seeded Hamilton College in a New England Small Athletic Conference quarterfinal game next Saturday. Wesleyan ends the season at 4-16-4 overall and 2-10-4 in the conference.
The Mules (9-10-5, 6-7-3 NESCAC) scored less than 30 seconds after the power play started as Anning tallied off an assist from Caroline Voyles (North Oaks, Minn.).
The game was tied 1-1 after one period and 3-3 after the second period. Colby's Kaitlyn Conway (Andover, Mass.) and Wesleyan's Julia Kazmers (Petoskey, Mich.) traded first-period goals less than one minute apart.
The Mules went up 3-1 with goals from Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) and Colette Finley (St. Paul, Minn.). The Cardinals fought back and tied the score again with goals from Conner Brannen (Lyme, N.H.) and an unassisted tally by Hannah Jackson (Brookline, Mass.) with 46 seconds left in the second period.
Colby goalie Genevieve Triganne (Point-Claire, Quebec) stopped 18 shots, while Wesleyan's Rachel Stemerman (Williamsville, N.Y.) had 35 saves.
