AMHERST, Mass. --- Despite 56 saves from Colby College goaltender Lacey Brown, the Mules fell 4-2 to Middlebury College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference women’s hockey semifinal playoff game Saturday at Amherst College.
Brown had 14 saves or more in each period, including an amazing 27 in the second period. Middlebury, the second seed in the tourney, had a 60-23 shot advantage.
Colby, which has played in three NESCAC Final Four tourneys in the past four years, closes out the season at 12-11-3. Middlebury will play top-seeded and defending champion Amherst College in the league title game Sunday at 2 p.m.
Middlebury took a 1-0 lead after the opening period, but fourth-seeded Colby managed to tie the game when Andrea Fuwa tallied at 3:05 off an assist from Laura Anning. Fuwa’s goal came on a deep slap shot through traffic from straight away.
The Panthers then got two straight goals from Haley MacKeen, who came into the contest with just one goal this year. She scored at 7:59 and 11:51 for a 3-1 lead after two periods.
Middlebury made it 4-1 when Ashley Bairos scored at 7:33 of the third period.
Anning closed out her great Colby career with the Mules’ final goal at 13:39 from Colette Finley. Anning finished her career at Colby with 60 goals and 58 assists for 118 career points in 97 games. Finley’s assist gave her 30 for her career and she added 23 goals for 53 points.
Colby’s talented senior class all played their final games. Becky Julian finished with 66 goals and 45 assists for 111 points, Amanda Comeau had 33 goals and 38 assists for 71 points, and Heather Nickerson finished with 10 goals and 31 assists for 41 points. Brown ended her career with 27 victories, while Jen Caruso and Shelley Payne also participated in their final games.
