NEW LONDON, Conn. --- Katie Palano supplied the offense and Loni Pisani did the job in goal once again as the Colby College women's soccer team clinched a New England Small College Athletic Conference playoff bid with a 2-0 road win at Connecticut College on Saturday.
The Mules moved to 6-6-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the NESCAC. Connecticut College fell to 4-9 overall and 0-8 in the league. Colby clinched at least the eighth seed in next Sunday's NESCAC playoffs, but could go as high as the sixth seed with a win over Bates College at 3 p.m. Friday and a little help.
Pisani posted her seventh shutout of the season with 11 saves and the Mules moved within one shutout of tying a team record for shutouts in a season. All six of Colby's wins and the lone tie have been by shutout.
"It's exciting to win on the road and clinch the playoff spot," Colby head coach Jen Holsten said. "But we still have a lot to play for on Friday. We could better our playoff seed, we're playing for a winning record, and we could still tie the team record for shutouts."
Palano scored two pretty goals – the first two conference scores for the Colby sophomore. Her header off a corner kick from Kate Pistel gave the Mules a 1-0 lead at 68:37 of the contest and proved to be the game-winning goal. Palano got her second goal just 3:03 later when she scored off another set piece --- this time a direct kick by Su-Lin Del Guercio.
"We have had problems scoring goals this year," Holsten said. "So we have been working hard on the set pieces in practice and it paid off today."
