AMHERST, Mass. --- Colby College's Ginny Raho and Julie Achenbaum advanced to the quarterfinals in second doubles at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Amherst College on Friday.
Raho and Achenbaum took an 8-1 win over a team from Roger Williams in the first round and then won 8-5 over a Springfield pair in the next round. The Colby duo will play a third-seeded duo from Bowdoin College on Saturday.
Tracy Nale and Achenbaum won opening round singles matches, while Raho, Alex DeSherbinin and Nicole Veilleux all advanced with first round byes on Friday. Nale, playing at second singles, captured a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-5 win against Trinity's Sarah Gould. Nale will meet Connecticut College's Amanda Poe in the next round. Achenbaum won 6-1, 6-2 over Wellesley's Alex Lucas and takes on Trinity's Lindsay Ruslander in the next round.
In the other singles round with action for Colby, Allison Dunn fell 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2 to Wellesley's Jenna Mezin in the first round of first singles. Mezin also helped Wellesley's first doubles team to an 8-1 win against Dunn and Nale in the second round after the Colby pair received a bye in the first round.
DeSherbinin and Veilleux won 8-4 in the first round of third doubles over a team from Bates, but then fell 8-1 in the next round to an Amherst pair.
