WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College women's tennis team earned one of the biggest victories in many years with a 6-3 win against Wesleyan University in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Sunday.
"We've been gunning for Wesleyan ever since I was a freshman and it feels pretty good to finally pull through," Colby co-captain Tara Davidson said.
Davidson and Katie Brezinski won at second doubles and each won their singles matches to lead the Mules, who improve to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Wesleyan falls for the first time in moving to 8-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. The NESCAC playoffs have six teams competing and this win was key for the Mules' chances in making the tourney at the end of the regular season.
"I thought we were the better competitors today, which brought us the win," Colby head coach Doanh Wang said. "We had two big wins from second and third doubles along with a tightly fought match at first doubles."
Davidson and Brezinski combined for an 8-4 win at second doubles and both won their singles matches in straight sets. Audrey Jacobsen, Colby's third singles player and a co-captain, had the closest match with a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win over Genevieve Aniello. Kathryn Vergeyle had the other singles win at the sixth spot for Colby and she teamed up with Julie Achenbaum for a victory at third doubles.
"We brought our intensity and our best competitive fire to the courts," Jacobsen said. "At singles, two tightly fought matches at three and four helped propel us to victory with five and six providing the win."
Wesleyan's Anika Fischer and Sarah Miller earned a tight 9-7 win at first doubles. Fisher won in straight sets at first singles as did Miller at the second spot.
Colby will play host to Tufts University this Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
