Barton closes out NCAA meet in 20K race

BOZEMAN, Mont. --- Colby College's Jake Barton (Morrisville, Vt.) closed out his NCAA Skiing Championships after being disqualified in the 20-kilometer classical mass start Nordic ski race Friday at Bohart Ranch.

Barton finished 36th in the race, but then was later disqualified.. He had takens some skating steps (sliding the skis) up a hill.

Barton, a junior, was in 35th place out of 39 skiers after five kilometers and then fell back one spot after 10 kilometers. He stayed in that position over the final 10 kilometers to finish in a time of 1 hour, 2 minutes, 37.8 seconds.
 
Barton took 32nd place in the 10-kilometer freestyle event in racing Wednesday at the national meet.
 
University of Utah's Miles Havlick won the individual title with a time of 56:24.3, just holding off Montana State's David Norris (56:25.8). Franz Bernstein of the University of Vermont had the best Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) placing after taking third in 56:40.8.
