BANGOR, Maine --- Despite having six extra-base hits among their 23 hits in two games, the Colby College softball team fell twice to Husson University on Friday in a non-conference doubleheader.
The Mules (2-10 overall) had plenty of offense and base runners, but Colby stranded 21 runners in the 7-3 and 10-4 setbacks.
Aimee Polimeno (North Woodstock, N.H.) went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs in the opener. Meghan Lewia (Wells, Maine) also had three hits, drove in a run, and scored one run. Erin Caputo (Sayville, N.Y.) had a pair of doubles.
Colby jumped out to an early lead as Lewia doubled to center field to lead off the game, and after a strikeout, moved to third on a passed ball. Katie Graichen (Arundel, Maine) drove her in by hitting into a fielder's choice. Colby added another in the top of the second as first baseman Caputo ripped a two-out double to left and came in on a Lewia single for a 2-0 Mules lead after two innings.
The Eagles answered in the bottom of the third, when the rally started on a Victoria Overlock (Belfast, Maine) single through the right side. Nicole Sargent (Sullivan, Maine) kept it going with a single to right, and Husson loaded the bases on an Ashley Smith (Ellsworth, Maine) single to left. McCarty stepped up and slapped a single to right that plated two. Brianna Webster (Belfast, Maine) finished off the scoring with a single through the left side, and the Eagles took a 3-2 lead after three innings.
The Mules tied it up in the top of the fourth when Polimeno singled up the middle and moved to second on a passed ball. That set the table for Caputo, who came through with a double to right, plating Polimeno and tying the score at 3-3.
Husson once again responded in the bottom of the inning with three more runs and then added a solo run in the fifth.
In the second game, Colby center fielder Lindsay Peterson (Fairfield, Conn.) went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and two RBI, and third baseman Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) chipped in with a pair of RBI of her own while lacing a double. Carolyn Bennett (Scarborough, Maine) had three hits and one run, Caputo finished with two hits, and Pulford had a pair of hits for the Mules.
The Eagles scored seven runs in the first two innings to take control. In the top of the third, Colby started a comeback attempt as Allana Sanborn (Eliot, Maine) got things started with a lead-off walk. After Lewis reached on a fielder's choice, Peterson drove her in with a double to left center. Graichen kept things going with a single to shortstop, setting the table for Wheeler who belted a two-RBI double to left center, making the score 7-3 in favor of the Eagles.
Husson answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third and had a lone run in the fourth.
Colby would try to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth when Polimeno led off with a single up the middle, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Bennett drew a walk and a Sanborn single loaded the bases for the Mules. Lewia stepped up with the bases loaded and no outs, and ripped a single up the middle that scored Polimeno, but a strong throw from center field got Bennett out at the plate.
