WATERVILLE, Maine --- Tori Sansone belted a pair of doubles, was 3-for-3 on the day, and scored a pair of runs to help the Colby College softball team to a 10-0 victory over Thomas College in five innings on Wednesday at Thomas.
Meanwhile, lefty pitcher Lauren Becker tossed a two-hit shutout. She struck out four and walked one in earning her third victory of the season.
The Mules improve to 8-6 overall heading into an away NESCAC East game against Bowdoin College on Friday at 4 p.m. Colby and the Polar Bears play a doubleheader at Crafts Field on Saturday at noon.
Colby had 12 hits and three walks in a game shortened to five innings because of the eight-run rule.
Brianne Wheeler drove in three runs, had a pair of hits, and scored once for the Mules. Katherine Zafirson added two hits and two RBI, while Erica Pulford finished with two hits and one run. Emily Schatz drove in two runs and had one hit, and teammates Meaghan Lewia and Carylanne Wolfington both had two runs and one hit.
Sansone doubled with one out in the second inning, moved to third on a single by Pulford, and scored what turned out to be the game-winning run when Thomas threw out Pulford trying to steal second.
Colby added four more runs in the third inning after Lewia singled and moved to second on a passed ball with one out. Wolfington reached on a fielder's choice when Thomas looked to get Lewia out at third base. After Wolfington stole second base, Schatz smacked a two-run single to score Lewia and Wolfington. Wheeler followed with a double to bring in Schatz and then later scored on a double by Sansone.
Colby went up 7-0 in the third inning when Zafirson reached on a one-out single. Lewia reached on a fielder's choice that brought Zafirson to second base, Wolfington followed with an RBI single to score Zafirson, Scatz reached by fielder's choice, and Wheeler brought in her third run with a single to score Wolfington.
The Mules quickly loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning after back-to-back singles from Sansone and Pulford and then a walk to Kelsey Park. Zafirson hit a two-run single to bring in Sansone and Pulford. Carolyn Bennett, running for Zafirson, later came in with the 10th run.
