HARTFORD, Conn. ---- Megan Michie (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) threw her first collegiate shutout and Kelsey Park (Presque Isle, Maine) had an RBI triple in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Colby College softball team to a 1-0 win over Trinity College in NESCAC East play Friday.
Colby moves to 11-19 overall and 1-9 in conference play heading into Saturday's noon doubleheader with Trinity.
"We played really crisp and sharp defensively," Colby head coach Kristina Katori said. "Megan was mixing her pitches so well and keeping them off-balance, and Erica Pulford called a great game at catcher."
Michie, who won her fifth game of the season, scattered five singles, had five strikeouts, and no walks. She has fanned 46 batters in the past seven games, including five NESCAC contests. Michie has 85 strikeouts and just 13 walks in 88.1 innings pitched.
The Mules advanced runners to third base in both the fourth and fifth innings, but could not score a run off Trinity pitcher Katharine Poulos.
Colby scored the game-winning run when Pulford reached by error to lead off the inning and Park tripled to right field.
"Kelsey hit a great pitch that was on the outside corner," Katori said. "It was a sinking liner where the right fielder came in hard and it just got underneath her glove and went by her."
Trinity led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single that Colby center fielder Lindsay Peterson almost made a catch on. The Bantams tried to sacrifice the runner, but the batter bunted the ball in the air and was caught by third baseman Brianne Wheeler. The next batter hit a line shot to Wheeler, who threw to first to double off the runner and end the game.
Wheeler had two of Colby's five hits in the game. Katie Graichen added a double and Peterson had one single.
