WATERVILLE, Maine --- Erin Caputo (Sayville, N.Y.) had to get some extra work done to get her victory, but the Colby College first-year pitcher did the job in helping the Mules to a 3-2 victory over local rival Thomas College in non-conference softball play Wednesday at Thomas.

The Mules won for the third straight time in improving to 7-13 overall, while Thomas falls to 8-17-1.

Caputo won her second game of the season despite allowing two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. She struck out four, walked none, and gave up five hits.

Colby's Carolyn Bennett (Scarborough, Maine) drove in the eventual game-winning run in the top of the eighth off of a single down the left field line, bringing home Lindsey Peterson (Fairfield, Conn.).

The game remained scoreless until the top of the second when Caputo helped her own cause with an RBI right up the middle, bringing in Peterson for the 1-0 lead. Thomas third basemen Ali Kriegel prevented the Mules from scoring a second run, throwing out Aimee Polimeno (North Woodstock, N.H.) at home after Bennett reached on a fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the second the Terriers left two batters on base as Kriegel was thrown out at home while trying to score off of a Sara Pavento single.

The Mules struck again in the top of the third with two outs when Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) sent a single up the left side to bring home Meaghan Lewia (Wells, Maine) for the 2-0 lead. Wheeler was able to advance off of the throw to second and was soon in scoring position after a single from Peterson sent her to third. The Terriers managed to get out of the inning.

Both teams' bats went cold as only one hit was registered until the bottom of the seventh. A three-hit inning provided the Terriers with two runs to even the score at 2-2. Samantha Moore got things going for Thomas with a single up the middle. Lauren Hachey put the tying run on base when she singled in advancing Moore to second base. A groundout by Kriegel advanced the runners into scoring position and Gastia singled with two outs to bring home Moore and Hachey. Gastie was thrown out as she attempted to advance to second.

The Mules didn't wait long to break the tie in the extra session as Bennett's RBI single made it a 3-2 game.

With Gastia placed on second, Thomas' Kate Thibodeau hit a sacrifice bunt on a full count to advance Gastia and put the tying run on third. However, Caputo managed to get out of the inning for the Colby win.

The Mules will play host to Tufts University on Friday at 4 p.m.
