BRUNSWICK, Maine –- Meaghan Lewia and Carolyn Bennett each had two hits for the Colby College softball team, but Bowdoin College pulled away for a 4-0 win over the Mules in NESCAC East play Saturday.
The Mules (8-7 overall, 2-2 NESCAC East) will play host to Bowdoin (16-9, 3-4) on Sunday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Crafts Field.
Lauren Becker had the other hit for the Mules.
Bowdoin applied offensive pressure early as Toni DaCampo and Gen Barlow hit back to back doubles to center field from the number two andthree slots. Barlow's shot scored DaCampo from second to put the Polar Bears up 1-0. Adriane Krul tallied an RBI single to left, sending Barlow home, giving Bowdoin the 2-0 advantage after the opening inning.
Colby's biggest scoring opportunity came in the top of the third as Bennett hit a two-out single for the Mules' first hit of the day. Meaghan Lewia followed up with a double that curled down the left field line, advancing Bennett to third. The Polar Bears secured a third out when Hanna Wurgaft fielded a ground ball and made the throw to first. DaCampo opened the bottom of the third with a lead-off walk before Katie Gately knocked a single to left. An error in left field allowed Gately to take second and DaCampo to come around for Bowdoin's third run of the afternoon.
The Mules had a pair of base runners in the fifth following back-to-back singles, but were once again unable to secure a run. The Polar Bears took advantage of some Mule missteps in the bottom of the same inning, to extend the score to 4-0. Melissa DellaTorre closed out the final two innings with four strikeouts.
Megan Michie and Aimee Polimeno each pitched three innings and combined to allow just two earned runs for Colby.
