MEDFORD --- The Colby College softball team came up against one of the top NCAA Division III pitchers in Allyson Fournier of Tufts University in an 8-0 loss Friday.
Fournier threw a no-hitter for the seventh-ranked Jumbos in the six-inning game (eight-run rule) and nearly had a perfect game. Erica Pulford was Colby's lone base runner when she reached by error leading off the top of the sixth inning. Fournier had strikeouts on 16 of her 18 outs in earning her fourth no-hitter of the season.
Tufts is 33-3 overall and 10-0 in NESCAC East play. Colby falls to 11-15 (2-8). The Jumbos and Mules will play a doubleheader Saturday at Spicer Field beginning at noon.
Sara Hedtler led off the first inning with a triple and scored two batters later on Jo Clair's groundout.
The big inning for the Jumbos was the third, plating five runs on four hits. Michelle Cooprider began the inning with a solo home run. The next four batters reached base before a two-run single by Abby Curran. Steph Tercero added an RBI single to make it 6-0 Tufts after three innings.
Clair hit a lead-off homer of her own in the fourth inning. Bri Keenan's run-scoring single in the sixth inning ended the game.
