LEWISTON, Maine --- Emily Schatz homered in each game and Megan Michie improved to 4-1 on the season as the Colby College softball team split a doubleheader with Bates College, falling 4-1 in the opener and then winning 7-3 in the nightcap on Saturday.
Schatz accounted for Colby's lone run in the first game and then hit a two-run shot in the second game. The first-year shortstop moved her batting average to .404 and leads the team in RBI (14).
Meanwhile, Michie had 12 strikeouts, no walks, and scattered four hits in the second game. She lowered her earned run average to 1.68 in 33.1 innings of work and now has 34 strikeouts and just eight walks.
Bates rode a strong pitching performance by Brenna Callahan to win the first game.
Bates (5-9, 1-5 NESCAC East) earned its first NESCAC East Division win, but Colby (7-6, 2-1 NESCAC East) took two out of three games in the rivals' series.
In the first game, Bates got on the board in the second inning with a two-out rally, as Karen Lockhart and Anna Berenson both reached on errors and Brenna Callahan walked to load the bases. Mary Lewis then singled home Berenson for the 1-0 lead.
Schatz hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth, but Bates went back ahead in the bottom of the frame, as AnnaMarie Martino reached on an error and scored on a double by Freedman.
Bates put up two insurance runs in the sixth, rallying with two outs and no one on base. Callahan singled and Mary Lewis moved her to second with a bunt single, before Martino doubled to score Callahan. Lewis then came home on Caroline Gattuso's fielder's choice to make it 4-1.
Callahan (2-2) out-dueled Amy Polimeno (1-3) for the win, limiting Colby to one run on six hits and two walks while striking out four batters. Polimeno had eight strikeouts in her complete-game effort.
Michie received immediate run support in the first inning of the second game. Carylanne Wolfington reached on a Bates error and later came home on Brianne Wheeler's RBI single.
Bates tied the game up with a run in the bottom of the first: Lewis hit a lead-off single, moved to third on a two-base error, and scored on Gattuso's sacrifice fly to left.
Colby assumed a 4-1 lead in the second after Tori Sansone's lead-off single, followed by a Meaghan Lewia walk, a two-run double by Wolfington, and another RBI double by Schatz to chase Wolfington home.
Schatz put an exclamation point on her big day with a second round-tripper, a two-run shot to left-center that scored Wolfington. Schatz was 3-for-3 in the game to lead Colby's 11-hit attack.
Gattuso got two runs back for Bates with her first career home run in the sixth, a deep fly to left that scored Lewis, who had bunted on safely. But Michie finished the inning with two straight strikeouts.
