MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --- Mandy Ferguson finished in eighth place in the 500-yard freestyle for Colby College on the first day of the NESCAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday night.
Ferguson had a time of 5:07.59 in the championship final, but had earlier posted a season-best 5:05.03 in the morning preliminary race. Caroline Wilson of Williams College won the championship final in 4:53.61.
Ferguson started the night session by joining forces with Charlotte Veazie, Jenny Reiner, and Sarah Hansen to place seventh in a season-best time of 1:39.00 in the 200 freestyle relay. The best time for the Mules before Friday was 1:43.25.
Colby had three swimmers in the 'B' final and one in the 'C' race in the 50 backstroke. Jess Blais had a season-best time of 28.39 in the prelim and took 11th overall with a 28.45 in the night session. Sarah Nalven was 15th for the Mules in 28.91 (28.55 prelim) and Kayleigh Monahan was 16th in 29.21 (28.98 prelim). Carly Rushford had a time of 20.01 in taking 21st place.
Rosie Wennberg took 13th place in the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.85 after having a season-best 26.74 in the preliminary race. Leah Walpuck made the 'C' final in the 50 fly and finished in 24th place at 28.03.
In diving competition, Colby's Martha Mesna had a season-best 263.04 in the 1-meter event to place 17th overall.
Sarah Hansen finished with a season-best 24.98 in the prelims of the 50 freestyle and then took 20th overall with a 25.07 time in the 'C' final. Charlotte Veazie also had a season-best 2:13.30 in the prelims and took 22nd overall with a 2:14.12 clocking in the 'C' final of the 200 individual medley.
Blais, Josie Bazemore, Kathryn Lee, and Reiner teamed up to take 10th place in the 400 medley relay (4:06.05).
The Mules are in 10th place in the team standings after the first of three days of competition.
