WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. --- Colby College's Mason Roberts finished in third place in the 50-yard breaststroke and broke a 10-year-old school record with a 26.07 clocking in the championship final at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday night at Williams College.
Roberts broke the old school record of 26.47 set in 2002 in the morning preliminary race with a 26.08 time and then raced slightly faster in the final to break his own record. Roberts had gone into the day with a season-best time of 28.00.
The Mules had a big day in the 50 breaststroke. Paul Wennberg, a first-year swimmer, took seventh place in 27.07 (26.93 prelim time) and Adam Spierer was 21st with a 28.21 (28.07 prelim).
Ryan Trafton joined Roberts and Wennberg in racing in championship finals. Trafton was eighth in the 50 butterfly with a 23.30 clocking (23.23 prelim). Jack Mauel placed 15th in the 50 fly with a 23.65 (23.34 prelim).
Colby won two 'B' finals (places 9 to 16) in relay races by placing ninth overall. Vincent Galea, Tom Hurley, Mauel, and Ray Rieling had a season-best time of 1:26.92 in the 200 freestyle relay. Mauel and Rieling also joined forces with Andy Peterson and Roberts to a season-best time of 3:31.51 in the 400 medley relay. Colby's time in the 400 medley relay would have placed them seventh in the championship final.
Galea took 20th in 22.06 (21.99 prelim) and Hurley had a 22.46 (22.22 prelim) for 24th place in the 50 freestyle. Peterson added a 23rd in the 500 freestyle in 4:55.38.
Colby finishes the first of three days of swimming in eighth place with 206 points. The Mules are ahead of Hamilton College (166), Trinity College, and Wesleyan University.
