WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College's Caitlin Burchill (Walpole, Mass.) and fellow senior Mackie Sewall (Santa Barbara, Calif.) both had solid matches and one reached a milestone, but University of New England took a back-and-forth 3-2 win over the Mules in non-conference play Wednesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Colby seniors and co-captains Burchill and Sewall were both honored before their final home match. Burchill reached 1,000 career digs with 10 digs and 10 kills on the night. Sewall also was strong with 11 kills and four blocks.
Maggie Taylor (Cabin John, Md.) paced the Mules (7-12) with 11 kills and 17 digs, Emily Varni (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had 12 digs and three aces, Kate Pleasants (Virginia Beach, Va.) dished 40 assists, and Lily Kramlich-Taylor (Sacramento, Calif.) had nine kills and three blocks.
Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished with 17 kills and eight blocks (seven solo) to lead UNE (13-11).
Angie Burnette (North Andover, Mass.) added 11 kills and six blocks (three solo) and setter Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) had 40 assists and 15 defensive digs for UNE. The Nor'easters also had 10 kills from Abby Davis (Somersworth, N.H.), a match-high 31 digs by Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, Mass.), and 14 digs from Jackie Stone (Saginaw, Mich.). Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) had a fine all-around match with eight kills, 15 digs, three aces, and three blocks.
