Volleyball starts strong in 3-1 loss to Polar Bears

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College volleyball team got off to a nice start against 22nd-ranked Bowdoin College by taking the first set, but the Polar Bears battled back to take the next three in a 3-1 victory over the Mules on Tuesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
 
Bowdoin stands at 24-2 overall and has won 12 straight matches, while the Mules fall to 12-10 overall. The Polar Bears took a 20-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-19 victory.
 
Tory Edelman (New York, N.Y.) and Hillary Cederna (Cumberland, Maine) both had 11 kills for Bowdoin, while setter Sophia Cornew (Portola Valley, Calif.) finished with 44 assists, 12 digs, and two aces. Melissa Haskell (Medfield, Mass.) finished with nine kills for the winners and libero Taylor Vail (Glendale, Calif.) had 20 digs.
 
Kim Donaldson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had 10 kills and Natalie Roy (Los Altos, Calif.) added nine kills for Colby. Maggie Taylor (Washington, D.C.) had six kills and a team-high 20 digs, while Ellie Linden (Andover, Conn.) and Emily Varni (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) each had 17 digs.
 
Colby led 14-12 in the fourth game and the two teams were tied at 15-15 when Bowdoin ran off three straight points to force a Mule timeout and take control of the set.
